BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Harold Smith was announced as this week's Gulf South Conference (GSC) Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week for his performance on Saturday at the Third Annual Furman Cross Country Classic. He is the first Lee University cross country athlete to earn the honor.

Smith placed first among non-DI runners to lead the Flames to a win over 19 teams. When combined with all entries, the sophomore was the 10th runner across the finish line and the Flames placed eighth out of 31 squads.

"Harold really stepped it up," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "Running under 25:00 for an 8K is an outstanding accomplishment."

His time of 24:58.56 was just 0.3 seconds shy of the Lee record Smith set last season at the Sand Shark Invitational.

The Flames have a couple weeks off before traveling to Louisville on October 3 for the Greater Louisville Classic. The event will be held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
