McKenzie Training Room

The Lee University Sports Medicine Department strives to educate the student-athlete on proper healthcare management, provide and coordinate excellent care between healthcare professionals, and provide a safe and healthy environment for the success of the injured student athlete. Athletic trainers are healthcare professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize patient activity in athletics and everyday life. Athletic training incorporates prevention, examination and assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of acute and chronic conditions.

Dan Heinbaugh was named the Head Athletic Trainer in August of 2022 after serving seven years as an athletic trainer for Lee.  Breanne Crittenden is the Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Wellness . In addition, we have two athletic trainers, Shelby Landolt and Paige Wisebaker and several student assistants. Our sports medicine staff work together to provide comprehensive health care services for over 300 student athletes.

Dr. Dewayne Knight has been the team physician for Lee University Athletics for 20 years. In 2015 he was awarded the Dr. Charles W. Conn Service Learning Faculty Award and was inducted into the Lee University Hall of Fame. He works directly with the athletic training staff to help coordinate healthcare for student-athletes. Our department also works closely with local orthopedic surgeons to provide our athletes with the best care. Former Lee baseball player, Dr. Jason Spangler also serves as a team physician in addition to his role as an orthopaedic surgeon with the Center for Sports Medicine and Orthopaedics in Cleveland, Tenn.

The athletic training room is located on the ground floor of the McKenzie Athletic Building. The athletic training room contains therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation equipment to assist the injured student-athlete to full athletic participation. There is also a small athletic training room in Paul Dana Walker Arena.

Our sports medicine department assists the athletic training education program at Lee University with teaching pre-certification master student athletic training (MSAT) through clinical experiences. MSAT, under the direct supervision of our staff, are able to assist with the day to day care, treatment, and rehabilitation of our athletes. Through this supervision they gain valuable hands-on experience in an excellent learning environment. If you are interested in becoming an athletic trainer please contact Taz Kicklighter (email)
