BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - It hasn't taken long for softball pitcher Shonna Penney to find her groove in the circle as she was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week the league office announced on Tuesday.

Penney, who player her high school ball at Soddy Daisy just down the road, earned the win in the Lady Flames 5-3 victory over Alabama Huntsville in the GSC opener on Saturday. Penney worked three scoreless innings allowing just two hits in relief to shutdown the Chargers.

On Saturday, the freshman was the tough-luch loser as she tossed all seven innings and allowed just one unearned run in Lee's 1-0 setback to Montevallo.

Penney currently leads staff with 1.32 ERA and three complete games in five starts. She has allowed just four earned runs in 27.1 innings pitched. 

The Lady Flames (7-5, 2-1) will host doubleheader against Miles College today at  3 p.m. before welcoming West Alabama to Butler Field for a weekend conference battle.
