NEW ORLEANS, La. - Josiah Brooks became the first Lee track and field athlete to earn National Athlete of the Week honors the USTFCCCA announced on Tuesday.

Brooks opened the outdoor season with bang this past weekend for the Flames during the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by Georgia Tech.

The junior from Athens, Ga., put on a show for his home state, finishing second in the 200 with the top time in NCAA Division II this year at 21.02. Brooks was also the top collegiate finisher in the 100 at the meet with a time of 10.50, a time that is tied for fifth on the NCAA Division II Descending Order List.

To cap off his weekend, Brooks also posted the top triple jump mark in NCAA Division II this year with a leap of 15.41m (50-6¾), giving him three NCAA Division II Provisional Qualifying Marks on the week.

Brooks’ triple jump mark ranked sixth among all collegiate performers this past weekend, while his 200 time tied for ninth.

"This is a great recognition of Josiah's hard work. He is one of the most committed athletes we have. He never takes a day at practice for granted," said head coach Caleb Morgan. "I am very proud of the way he has started out the outdoor season. If he keeps the momentum going this could be a very special year."

In addition to the national recognition Brooks was also named the Gulf South Conference Athlete of the Week the league office announced on Wednesday.
