BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lee University Jesus Garcia was named this week's Gulf South Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week for his role in helping the Flames go 4-0 on the week, including a 3-0 record in GSC contests.
This is the second time this season that Garcia has been named Freshman of the Week.
Garcia was 4-0 at No. 2 singles. He began the week with a 6-3, 6-4 win against Tennessee Wesleyan. The next day he posted a 6-3, 6-1 conference victory against Shorter. Over the weekend, he posted two more wins. At Delta State, he outlasted Hugo Stroppiana to win their first set 7-6, then finished the straight-set win with a 6-0 second set mark. Garcia concluded the week with a 6-3, 6-2 win at Christian Brothers.
"Jesus had a very strong week," said Lee head Patric Hynes. "His win at Delta State was very high quality."
In doubles competition, Garcia teamed with Cristian Pons at the second position to record a 2-2 record for the week. They dropped a 6-4 match against Tennessee Wesleyan and were beaten 6-3 at Delta State. The duo posted 6-1 and 6-4 wins against Shorter and Christian Brothers, respectively.
Following Wednesday afternoon's non-conference match with King University, the Flames return to action on Friday at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The GSC contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EDT.
