CLEVELAND, Miss. – After giving up an early goal to host Delta State in a Gulf South women's soccer contest on Sunday afternoon, Lee's top three goal scorers went to work and helped the Lady Flames improve to 6-1 in conference play and 9-3 overall with the 5-1 victory.
"Today was a nice cap to the weekend," said coach Matt Yelton, who had watched his Lady Flames whip Christian Brothers 7-1 on Friday. "We played in a tough environment on a tough surface and we were able to come away with three points today."
Delta State took the 1-0 lead in the 29
th minutes when Payton Pearson scored on an assist from Lauren Pearson.
"We seem to want the other team to score a goal before we decide to kick it in gear," Yelton pointed out. "But once the opponent scores, we have responded well. However, it would be nice if we just put a team on their back foot and keep them there."
The Lady Flames responded to Delta State's score in less than a minute's time. Freshman Summer Lanter tallied her team-leading eighth goal and tied the contest in the 30
th minute.
Senior Leah Fortune, who has been on fire over the past few weeks, put the Lady Flames on top 2-1 at the half.
Lee junior Laura Thacker, another Lady Flame at the top of her game, scored the next two goals to give her club the comfortable 4-1 margin. Her first goal came at the 56:20 mark and she countered that tally with her patented header off an assist from Debbie Rogers. Both Thacker and Fortune now have seven goals for the season.
Fortune knocked in the final goal of the game in the 71
st minute. Liz Hagan got her first assist of the season.
Yelton praised the play of his defense. "I thought our back four did a great job today limiting the opportunities that Delta had to go forward. In terms of total chances we had the majority of possession and Haley (Gribler, Lee's keeper) was rarely tested during the game."
"The surface kept us from playing our style of play," he added, "but we still attacked with a lot of passion and energy and were constantly a threat to score."
The Lady Flames will return to the Lee Soccer Field on Friday and welcome Union University. The first match of the GSC doubleheader is slated for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
