JACKSON, Tenn. - Union University goalkeeper Matt Kesler blocked a penalty kick by Arturo Rocha at the 103:22 mark in the second overtime and forced the Lee men's soccer team to settle for a 1-1 tie in the Gulf South Conference opener for both squads. The Flames are 1-1-1 overall and Union stands at 2-0-1.

The two squads were scoreless after the first 45 minutes but Rocha put the Flames on top with an unassisted goal at 55:38 in the second half. However, just over two minutes later the home standing Bulldogs tied the contest at one on a goal by Krister Andreassen (57:45). The goal was assisted by Joe Shultz.

"I know the boys were not satisfied with the draw," said coach Paul Furey. "Especially since we had a chance to win from the PK spot. Some areas of the field we are playing fairly well, but we are still missing that sharpness in the final third."

The Flames outshot the Bulldogs 17-14 and placed eight shots on goal, while Union had seven shots on target. Lee keeper Tom Halsall was credited with six saves, while Union's Kesler had seven saves.

"Our back line played well for 110 minutes after a lackluster start," noted Furey. "We will continue to come together and get better with each game."

The Flames will return to the Lee Soccer Field and host their first Gulf South contest on Friday when Memphis Christian Brothers comes calling for a 7 p.m. start. After a day of rest, Lee will host Delta State in another conference match on Sunday at 3 p.m.
