After the Lee men's soccer team and King College battled to a scoreless first half, the Flames struck for the only goal of the match at the 65:18 mark and opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 victory in the Olive Garden Invitational.

The four-team tournament saw Lynn University (Fla.) ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, score an impressive 4-1 victory over Shorter University. On Saturday, King and Shorter will open play at 4:30, while Lee will test Lynn at 7 p.m.

A pair of freshmen made Lee coach Paul Furey look awfully good in the second stanza. The coach had just inserted Austin Waddell and David Perez. Waddell immediately connected on a flutterball over the head of King goalkeeper Kari Sveinsson. Perez was credited with the assist.

With a large opening-night crowd cheering on the home squad, the Flames had several other scoring opportunities in the second 45 minutes and fired 12 shots and placed 10 on target. For the game, Lee attempted 22 shots and had seven at goalkeeper Sveinsson. All totaled, the Tornado keeper was credited with six saves.

On the other hand, King fired only 10 shots during the entire 90 minutes and had one on goal. Lee keeper Tom Halsall had a save. The Flames were given six corner kicks and the visitors three.

Friday's action was the opening matches for all four NCAA Division II clubs.
