HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - University of Alabama-Huntsville's Leo De Smedt scored in the seventh minute of the second overtime to give the 24th-ranked Chargers a 2-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) victory on Wednesday night.
The hard-earned win improves UAH's record to 10-2-0 overall and 5-1 in conference play. The Flames, playing in their third overtime game of the year, drops to 6-4-2 for the season and 1-2-1 in the GSC.
"At worst, we should have taken a point from this match but we just didn't take care of business like we should have," said a disappointed coach Paul Furey. "We had some great chances to win it but didn't capitalize. We certainly played good enough to win, but give credit to UAH for finishing their opportunity in the second overtime."
The host Chargers and Flames battled to a scoreless first half, but UAH broke the scoring ice in the 65th minute when John Imwalle tallied off a corner kick. The assist was credited to James Ballamy.
Lee fought back to tie the contest in the 75th minute when sophomore David Perez picked up a loose ball in the box and fired it into the lower left corner of the net. Regulation play and the first overtime ended in the 1-1 deadlock.
Tom Halsall had seven saves in goal for the Flames. Charger keeper Michael Winstone was credited with three saves in the win. "Tom had a couple of great saves in regulation and their keeper had a big save on Brady's scoring opportunity," Furey concluded.
UAH took 22 shots and placed 10 attempts on goal. Lee fired 16 shots, but only five were on target. The Flames received eight corner kicks and the Chargers were awarded seven. Lee was charged with 11 fouls and UAH was whistled for eight.
Lee will be back in Gulf South action on Friday and Sunday. The Flames will face Delta State at the Lee Soccer Field at 7:30 on Friday and then entertain GSC newcomer Mississippi College on Sunday at 3:30.
