Lady Flames Open NCCAA Play With Victory

Post Another Shutout in 2-0 Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Continuing its outstanding defensive play, the Lee women's soccer team passed the first test in pool play of the NCCAA National Championship being played at the Austin Tindall Park on Monday afternoon.

The Lady Flames posted their 12th shutout of the season and their eighth in the last nine starts with a solid 2-0 victory over Roberts Wesleyan University (N.Y.). Lee will watch the men play at 4:30 on Tuesday before returning to pool play action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. A win would assure the Lady Flames of a spot in the semifinals which begin on Friday.

Lee wasted little time in scoring the only goal it would need in the 90-minute affair. Kathryn Healy picked up a ricochet-shot off Redhawk goalkeeper Marissa Sell and calmly knocked the ball into the right side of the net. Kaela Leskovar was credited with the assist.

After clinging to the 1-0 margin at the break, Sarah Standley gave the Lady Flames a bit of insurance when she scored an unassisted goal in the 70th minute. All totaled the Lady Flames and Redhawks took an even amount of shots. Each fired nine while Lee had six on target and Roberts Wesleyan placed five on goal.

Lady Flames' goalkeeper Marbel Egwuenu was instrumental in helping her club record its 13th victory of the season against only four losses and one tie.

"Tonight was a very good example of how a team can get a result by just putting great effort into the game," stressed Lee coach Matt Yelton. "We are playing with multiple injured players, but we just go out and give our best and that's all I can ask of the team.

"Roberts Wesleyan put in an excellent performance and were dangerous all night," Yelton added. "Our backs were superb and never gave any real opportunities in the run of play. Mae (Egwuenu) was excellent on denying them any chances in corners.

"I'm really proud of this team and we went really deep into our roster tonight. Our players just stepped in and gave their all to help the team win.

Yelton expects an even tougher challenge on Wednesday. "The road doesn't get any easier for us. Judson looks to be another tough team. We will do our best to recover but after only playing one game in the last month, we may struggle a little with our fitness this week."  Judson (Ill.) will be pitted against Roberts Wesleyan in their final pool play match on Tuesday at 4:30.
