Flames Advance In Pool Play

Defeat Spring Arbor 2-0 in Opening Round of NCCAA Nationals

KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Arturo Rocha broke open a scoreless battle with a goal in the 56th minute. He was assisted by Quade Marinell. David Perez tacked on a little insurance with a score in the 58th minute as Lee advanced to the second round of pool play in the NCCAA Men's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 victory over Spring Arbor University (Mich.) on Tuesday afternoon at the Austin Tindall Park.

"Arturo's goal was big for us because we just needed to score somehow to break a bit of a drought that we have been in for a while," said Lee coach Paul Furey.

The Flames will faceSouthwestern Christian University (Bethany, Okla.) on Wednesday at 4:30 as they seek to advance to the semifinalround on Friday. Southwestern opened pool play onMonday and lost to Spring Arbor 2-0. The championship is divided into three pools with the winner of each pool advancing plus a wild card winner.

"This win in a sense was getting the perennial monkey off our back when it comes to scoring," explained coach Furey after the victory. "We've been playing pretty good soccer but we just have had a tough time scoring. Hopefully, we can use this result to build on for the rest of the tournament."

Lee fired at will for most of the match (13 shots) and although they had only three on target, they made the best of the opportunities. At the same time, the Lee defense was holding Spring Arbor (14-5-4) to only nine shots and three were on goal. Lee goalkeeper Joey Hinshaw had three saves in posting the win.

"Joey did a teriffic job of filling in for Tom (Halsall). He had a huge save at the end of the game to secure the shutout but really played solid throughout," commented Furey. Halsall, who was in the midst of an All-American season, went out with a leg injury that required surgery earlier in the year.
