Three goals in the final 30 minutes and another outstanding effort by the Lee defense helped spark the Flames to a 3-0 victory over visiting Shawnee State (Ohio) at the Lee Soccer Field on Saturday night.
The win is the second of the week by coach Paul Furey's club and gives the Flames an overall mark of 5-2-1 heading into Gulf South Conference action next week. Shawnee State drops to 1-6-2 on the year.
"We played a really good second half tonight," said coach Furey. "They are a tough team to break down as they put a lot of players behind the ball. But we were patient and composed, finally coming through with Colin (Cole) setting up Quade (Marinell) for the game winner."
Marinell's score came at the 59:38 mark in the second stanza. It was a hard strike into the right corner of the net and past Bear goalkeeper Brandon Pfeifer. The second score belonged to Arturo Rocha who missed most of last season with a knee injury and is slowly working his way back into playing condition. Freshman Miles Scott was credited with the assist. The goal came with clock showing 77:24.
Scott garnered his first goal to go along with his earlier first assist in the 86th minute. The unassisted score was put into the net after the Shawnee keeper had been drawn away from the net. "Miles had a bit of a breakout game tonight," remarked Furey. "It was good to see one of our freshman get his first collegiate goal and an assist."
The Lee defense held the Bears to only four shots. Keeper Tom Halsall recorded four saves. On the other hand, the Flames fired 21 shots but only six were on target. "Tom (Halsall) and the defense finally got their first shutout. They have been playing well but were able to preserve it tonight."
The Flames will regroup for a couple of days and get ready to host West Florida in their first GSC match next Friday evening. They will come right back and test conference newcomer Spring Hill on Sunday.
