BOCA RATON, Fla. - A pair of goals in the opening 13 minutes was too much for the young Lee University women's soccer team to overcome as they kicked off the 2014 season with a 2-1 loss to host Lynn University on Friday evening at the new Bobby Campbell Stadium.

The sister's team of Kristie and Summer Schults tallied the goals for the Fighting Knights. Kristie knocked in the first score at the 8:11 mark and Summer poured in what turned out to be the winning goal some four minutes later (13:41).

The Lady Flames cut the margin in half when freshman Nicole Blanchard scored at the 35:04 mark. Neither team produced a goal in the final 45 minutes.

The rugged defensive battle saw Lee outshoot the host 8-6. The Lady Flames put seven shots on goal and the Lady Knights had six on target. Lee keeper Marbel Eqwuenu had four saves and Caitlin Shaver had five for the winners. Lee also had four corner kicks to two for the Fighting Knights.

"I'm certainly not unhappy with our showing tonight," said coach Matt Yelton.  "We played with five freshmen and two sophomores most of the way. I've seen a lot of young teams that would have quit when they got down 2-0 that early. Our girls kept fighting and that is what I like about this group. Our staff has just got to be patient and we'll keep getting better. We just had a bad five minute stretch tonight against a good soccer team."

The Lady Flames will rest on Saturday and then drive on down to Miami Shores on Sunday to challenge a Barry University team that is ranked No. 3 in one of the NCAA Division II polls. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. start. "Like always, we are playing a challenging schedule," added Yelton. "We believe this will help our team get better and be prepared when we are eligible to begin play for championships in NCAA D2 next season."
