Christian Brothers Stuns Flames in Final Seconds

Lao Scores As Time Expires To Hand Lee, 2-1 Defeat

Buzzer beaters are usually reserved for the basketball court but the Lee men's soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a thrilling finish as it fell 2-1 to Christian Brothers in the final second of Friday's Gulf South Conference match from the Lee Soccer Field.

The Bucs' Xavi Lao connected on his second goal of the match just before the horn sounded to hand the No. 11 Flames the heartbreaking loss.

Lee played the final 33 minutes a man down after senior Jon Finlay was handed a red card at the 56:45 mark of what always proves to be a very physical contest with the Memphis club.

The Flames responded by scoring the first goal of the contest in the 68th minute as Robbie Cutchin connected off a corner kick from Quade Marinell. It was Cutchin's first goal of the year.

Lao and Christian Brothers would eventually take advantage of the extra player as they scored on Lao's header off of a corner kick from Brendan Bennett at the 78:19 mark.

The equally contest battle saw Lee register 10 shots while the Bucs had 11. The Flames placed two shots on frame while CBU had four on target.

Lee keeper Tom Halsall recorded two saves, including a leaping punch out of hard struck shot in the 85th minute. Britton McGuire tallied one save for the visitors.

The Flames were credited with seven corners while Christian Brothers had five, scoring on two of those set pieces.

The first half was an even draw as both clubs had a few decent scoring opportunities but could not cash in. Lee had four shots to the Bucs five in the opening 45 minutes.
"That was a heart-breaker. Tremendously proud of our effort. Credit to Christian Brothers on two great goals," said head coach Paul Furey.

The Loss drops Lee to 10-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the GSC. The win propels Christian Brothers to 11-4 on the year and 4-3 in league play.

The Flames will need a short memory as they will turn right around on Sunday afternoon and host Union University at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs (5-8-1, 2-4-1) lost to Shorter, 1-0 on Friday night from Rome, Ga.
