Freshman Lauren Peters scored with less than two minutes ticked off the scoreboard clock in the opening half. and Lee's defense turned back two strong runs by visiting Union University in the final minutes as the Lady Flames improved to 10-4-2 overall and 9-2-0 in Gulf South Conference with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at the Lee Soccer Field.
Peters' goal came at the 01:54 mark. Summer Lanter delivered a perfect assist into the box and Peters headed her sixth goal of the year into the back of the net.Â
The Lady Flames fired 18 shots overall and had eight on target but Union keeper Kristen Frances came away with seven saves. On the other end, Lee's solid defense held the Lady Bulldogs to only six shots the entire afternoon and Lee keeper Haley Gribler recorded a pair of saves on those shots.
"Today was the tale of two teams for us," said Lee coach Chris Hennessey. "The first half we played well, but it was a different story in the second half.
"When I look back on the weekend we got two big wins and am proud of the girls for accomplishing that. Like every team at this time of year we are tired, but again when we were under pressure in the second half we showed great resilience. We know another win on Friday will guarantee us a top two finish," noted Hennessey.
Lee will close out the regular season on Friday, October 30 when they host Shorter University in a 7:30 p.m. start. It will also be Senior Night for the Lady Flames.
