Shorter Defeats Men's Soccer in OT 2-1

Goal In First Overtime Provides Winning Margin for Visitors

For the second time over the past three games, a goal in the final minutes or even seconds has spelled defeat for the Lee University men's soccer team. Last week it was Christian Brothers scoring two goals, one as the final second ticked away to hand the Flames a 2-1 Gulf South Conference defeat. On Friday evening visiting Shorter University tied the contest at one with a 1:10 remaining, and then came up with a second goal in the first overtime to hand Lee another gut-wrenching 2-1 loss.

The Flames will face West Florida in the opening round of the GSC playoffs. The contest will be hosted by Lee and the kickoff time is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Flames, 11-2-4 overall and 6-2-1 in conference play, jumped on top 1-0 at the 15:26 mark in the first half as Gabe Franco scored his third goal of the year on a rebound off a saved penalty kick. Lee seemed in control the remainder of the first half, but Shorter came out firing on all cylinders in the second stanza. While Lee was out-shooting the Hawks 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes, the Hawks out-shot the Flames 6-5 in the second half and 2-1 in the overtime period.

The Hawks tied the contest on Josh Addinal's first goal of the season on a header off a cross. The assist was claimed by Christopher Cummins. Shorter's winning goal came with less than five minutes remaining (95:29) in overtime. Charlie Dennis ripped in the unassisted score. It was his third tally of the year and came after he picked up a loose ball from the top corner of the box and zipped his winning shot into the far corner of the net.

The Flames had 13 shots in the hotly contested contest. Five of the shots were on goal. Shorter, defensive minded the entire afternoon, had 12 shots and placed five on target. Lee keeper Tom Halsall recorded three saves in taking the loss, while Shorter keeper Austen Trevers had four saves in the win. The Hawks were awarded eight corner kicks and Lee only two.
