Flames, Lions Battle To 0-0 Draw

Lee Finishes Non-Conference Slate with OT Tie

It always proves to be a physical battle when the Lee men's soccer team plays Bryan College and Thursday evening was no different, as the two crosstown clubs fought to a 0-0 draw at the Lee Soccer Field.

The Flames fired 19 shots and placed six on target while the Lions registered 16 shots and delivered four on goal in the evenly contest overtime match.

Arturo Rocha led the Flames with four shots and Danny Johnson added three. Bryan's Joel Glover led his club with five shots.

"It's a nice rivalry between us and Bryan," said head coach Paul Furey after the match. "We had some opportunities but weren't quite able to put them away. They always play with a lot of intensity against us."

Both keepers would not let the ball find the back of the net. Tom Halsall kept the clean sheet for the Flames and notched four saves. Alex Horton did the same for the Lions and was credited with six saves.

Lee earned 10 corner kicks in the match while Bryan settled for five. The Flames best scoring opportunities came in the first overtime period as they had two corner kicks and a couple of free kick opportunities deep in Bryan territory, but couldn't find the elusive goal.

The physical battle featured six yellow cards. Four cards were drawn for the visitors from Dayton, Tenn. while the Flames were shown two.

Lee finishes up the non-conference portion of its schedule at 5-2-1. The Flames have now played in two overtime matches and are 1-0-1. The Lions move to 3-3-2 on the season.

"Once again I thought the crowd was great," said Furey. "We certainly feel we have a home field advantage."

Furey and his boys will get a much needed rest before opening up Gulf South Conference play on Oct. 2 at No. 17 West Florida. The kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m.

"I planned the schedule this way to give us some time off before opening up conference play," noted Furey. "We've played West Florida tough in the past so we are looking forward to the challenge."
