CARROLLTON, Ga. – Junior Summer Lanter scored two goals and Kinsey Cichowitz added the final tally in leading the Lee women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over host University of West Georgia on Saturday evening.
The win completes the regular season for the Lady Flames. They will take an 11-1 Gulf South Conference (GSC) record and an overall mark of 14-2-1 into the conference tournament semifinals which gets underway on Nov. 4 in Pensacola, Fla.
The University of West Florida also finished the GSC schedule at 11-1, but earned the right to host the final four by defeating the Lady Flames 1-0 on Oct. 9. However, Lee will still own a share of the regular-season crown.
After the lost to West Florida, Lee recorded six straight victories and finished the regular season with 10 shutouts, a credit to coach Chris Hennessey and his defenders.
"I'm incredibly proud of tonight's win," said Hennessey. "The girls have had a great regular season and thoroughly deserve to be co-champions of this conference. All season they have given everything they have and tonight's win shows just have far they have come. We played with great energy and maturity and I hope we can take this with us next weekend into the GSC tournament. We are looking forward to a well-earned five days off."
Lanter's first goal came in the opening 20 seconds of the contest. She fired her shot from the right side of the box into the left post. Cichowitz delivered the assist. The margin remained 1-0 at the half.
The second goal by Lanter came in the 57th minute, off a deflected shot by Cichowitz. In the 71st minute Cichowitz knocked in her 14th goal of the season to complete the Lee scoring.
The Lady Flames fired 22 shots and had six on goal. Morgan Springer recorded three saves in taking the loss in goal for West Georgia. Lee keeper Haley Gribler had one save and picked up the win.
