Sophomore Drew Jackson scored in the opening 20 seconds and his teammates followed with five more goals as the Flames posted a convincing 6-0 victory over long-time rival Auburn University Montgomery on the Lee Soccer Field on Friday evening.
Â
Before the 90 minutes of play ended, six different Flames had recorded goals and only two were assisted. "That was a big boost for us early, having Drew take advantage of a miscue by AUM," said coach Paul Furey after his Flames improved to 3-2 on the year.
Â
"Tonight was a very solid performance for us. I liked the way we came out and scored in the first minute and then played all the way to the final whistle, having kept our focus. Our leadership with DP (David Perez) and Quade (Marinell) was big. I really feel good about other seniors. Arturo (Rocha) is rounding back into form."
Â
Lee's lead increased to 2-0 in the 11
th minute when Perez collected an assist from Jackson and skipped the ball in off a pass from the edge and tallied his fourth goal of the season. The halftime break came with the Flames holding only a 2-0 advantage, but the second half was an entirely different story.
Â
Senior Rob Cutchin put his first goal of the season on the board off a penalty kick in the 62
nd minute. Rocha stepped up for his first goal when Perez delivered the assist and Rocha quickly blasted a hard strike past the keeper. The final two scores came on first-time goals by sophomore Jose Orellana and junior Jake Molony.
Â
"Danny (Daniel Hrenko) has stepped in and played solid for us in the past two games in goal, earning his first collegiate shutout tonight," said the pleased Lee coach. The Warhawks were able to fire 16 shots but only four were on goal and Hrenko was there to turn all four attempts away and got his second win.
Â
The Flames had 19 shots but were very accurate with 11 attempts on goal. AUM keeper Jacob Bergengren had five saves and was charged with the loss. Â
Â
"We've got two more tough non-conference games," pointed out Furey. His Flames will host North Georgia from the Peach Belt Conference next Thursday at 7 p.m. and then will go on the road for three straight contests. Their first stop will be in Cedarville, Ohio on Saturday and will travel to Memphis to face Christian Brothers on Sept. 30, followed by an Oct. 2
nd date at Union University.
Â
"Hopefully, we can continue in getting momentum before we start Gulf South Conference play at Christian Brothers and Union," he concluded.
