CEDARVILLE, Ohio – Senior Quade Marinell calmly drilled a penalty kick just two minutes into overtime to send the Lee men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Cedarville University on Saturday evening.
The Flames are now 5-3 on the season after their fourth straight victory. The Yellow Jackets fall to 3-4-1.
Lee bounced back for the win after Cedarville rallied late and sent the match into extra time with a goal in the 88th minute. Bryce Childers headed home the tying strike from eight yards out.
"Tonight was a nice, tough win on the road, giving us momentum going into the Gulf South Conference," said head coach Paul Furey. "Our senior leaders really led the way for us. DP (David Perez) knocked in a good pass from Jose and then DP got taken down in the box in overtime to set up the PK. Quade played a terrific game in midfield before he scored the game-winner from the spot."
Senior David Perez got the Flames on the board first with a tap in goal at the 30:27 mark off a pass from Jose Orellana. Perez, an All-American last season, has scored in five straight matches.
Lee outshot Cedarville 17 to 11. The Flames put seven on frame while the Yellow Jackets had six on target.
Lee freshman goalkeeper Daniel Hrenko is now a perfect 4-0 on the season and was credited with four saves. Paulo Pinto had four saves in suffering the loss for Cedarville.
"Dan and the back line battled tough all night but we should have closed the door in the final five minutes," added Furey. "We had a lapse that pushed the match to OT. But I liked our approach in OT and we took care of business pretty quickly."
The Flames will now prepare to enter GSC play beginning with a road trip to Memphis to take on Christian Brothers on Friday at 8 p.m. The Bucs are currently 3-2 overall and are 0-1 in league play.
