The No. 25 Lynn Fighting Knights (2-0) fired out of the gates early and never looked back in handing the Lee men's soccer team (1-1) a 6-0 defeat on Saturday night to wrap up the Olive Garden Invitational from the Lee Soccer Field.
Jack Watson got Lynn started off on the right foot in the 10
th minute scoring off an assist from Dominic Docherty and Chistoph Maug. Docherty would put the visitors up 2-0 just four minutes later as he scored off a Christian Wittmann cross.
After the two quick strikes the Lee defense settled down and kept Lynn off the board for the rest of the first period. The Fighting Knights were far from done however as they scored four more times in the second half. Maug started the scoring spree off with a long range rocket shot from 45 yards out that found the back of the net over the outstretched arms of Lee's Tristan Putnam.
Alun Webb added a pair of goals in the 81
st and 82
nd minutes before Bernd Ellers finished things off with an unassisted goal in the 85
th minute.
"We certainly did not play the way that we are capable of or the way that we needed to tonight but more than that, we faced a very good opponent today in Lynn University," noted head coach Paul Furey. "They played as good as any team I have seen so far in the NCAA D2 since we arrived four years ago."
Putnam tallied seven saves for the Flames despite giving up the six goals. Lynn goalkeeper Alexander Roth kept a clean sheet and was credited with two saves. Roth allowed just one goal in the two victories for the Florida club.
The Fighting Knights outshot the Flames 23-6 and had eight corners to Lee's six. The physical match saw each team carded twice and 34 total fouls called.
Lynn's Watson scored four goals over the two matches and was named the Tournament MVP. Lee's Quade Marinell was named Offensive MVP after registering both Flames' goals in Thursday's 2-1 victory over Illinois Springfield. Defensive MVP honors went to the Fighting Knights' senior midfielder, Adam Hutchinson.
"I was very happy for Quade having received the Most Valuable Offense Player Award for the tournament. He played very well as did Robbie Cutchin in the midfield for us. We do want to send our appreciation out to Olive Garden and John McKenzie the general manager for being a partner in this event the past five years," concluded Furey.
The Florida club should expect to jump up in the polls next week after two convincing victories over Auburn Montgomery (9-1 on Thursday) and Lee.
The Flames will look to bounce back on Wednesday as they travel to Young Harris for a 7:30 kickoff with the Peach Belt foe. Lee returns to home next Saturday to host Tusculum at 7 p.m.Â
