The Lee University Women's Soccer team recorded its fourth shutout of the season with a 4-0 defeat of Union University Sunday afternoon at the Lee Soccer Field. The Lady Flames (8-5-1, 5-4-0 GSC) scored once in the opening half and added three more in the final 45 minutes to pull after from the Lady Bulldogs (0-10-1, 0-8-1 GSC).
"It was a slow first half," admitted Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "Union did a good job killing the game and probably outbattled us in certain areas of the field, but I was proud of the reaction we showed in the second half."
Emma Higgins tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 43
rd minute with a shot that looped over Union's goalkeeper and into the far corner. It was junior's third goal of the season.
Kate Carney put Lee up 2-0 a little under eight minutes into the second half. Lauren Peters received a pass from Riley Engels and slipped it past the keeper in the 61
st minute. Lee's final tally came on an own goal when Carly Smoltz's pass back into the box from the end line was directed back into the goal by a Union defender.
The Lady Flames outshot Union 23-4 and put 12 shots on target to just one by the visitors. Lee was credited with five corner kicks, while Union took three.
Taylor Green stopped the one shot she faced to record the shutout victory. Anna Venckus tallied six saves and the Union defense posted two more in the loss.
