LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After coming out and dominating shots in both halves, the Lee women's soccer team finally broke through in the 71st minute when a pair of freshmen, Avery Engels and Julia Kaset, hooked up to give the Lady Flames a 1-0 advantage.
The score came off a corner kick by Kaset and was headed into the back of the net by Avery Engels. The Lady Flames quickly struck again in the 76th minute when junior and sister Riley Engels connected on an unassisted goal. It was her fifth goal of the year. Just like in Thursday's win, Lee added a little icing to the victory cake in the 88th minute when senior Kate Carney tallied an unassisted goal. It was her fourth goal.
The 3-0 victory over host West Alabama was the third consecutive shutout by the Lady Flames and wrapped up two important GSC road wins over the weekend. Lee improved to 7-4 in conference play and 10-5-1 overall. The Tigers dropped to 8-4 in league play and hold the identical 10-5-1 overall mark.
"It was a big win for the team today," explained head coach Chris Hennessey. "We played with a lot of heart and character this afternoon and I am very proud."
The Lady Flames will continue their quest to climb higher in the GSC final season standings when they host West Georgia on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Valdosta State to close out the regular season next Sunday at 5 p.m. West Georgia (7-4) and Valdosta State (8-3) are also fighting for higher seeds in the upcoming conference tournament.
The Lady Flames had 25 shots and placed 19 on target. The Tigers posted many of their shots deep into the contest and finished with 17, six on goal. Lee keeper Taylor Green registered her third consecutive clean sheet with six saves. West Alabama's Jenni Aarniva had 15 saves against the rapid firing Lady Flames.
"There are a lot of positives from this weekend," the coach added. "We didn't concede and scored some really good goals. I think most importantly, we played well as a team for the entire 90 minutes."
