Kate Carney headed home the lone goal of the match in the 72nd minute as the Lee women's soccer topped West Georgia, 1-0 in the Gulf South Conference Quarterfinals from the Lee Soccer Field on Tuesday evening.
The Lady Flames are now 4-0-3 all-time in the GSC Tournament and have advanced to the semifinals in each of their first four seasons of postseason eligibility.
The Lady Flames outshot the Wolves 9-1 in the first half but led by sophomore keeper, Jackie Donaldson West Georgia went into the intermission in a scoreless tie. Donaldson finished the contest with nine saves.
The Wolves were the aggressors in the first 15 minutes of the second half but the Lady Flames regained their footing, holding a 10-3 advantage in shots while finally pushing through for the game-winning score.
After several close calls, Devin Healy swung the ball to the left flank where defender Avery Engels was making a run. Engels then delivered a perfectly placed ball into the box for Carney to head home.
"Gigi (assistant coach Luidgi Beauzille) was screaming get in the box so I charged towards the net and Avery delivered a perfect pass and I was fortunate enough to put into the back of the net," said Carney.
Lee keeper Taylor Green kept her eighth clean sheet of the season and recorded two saves.
"It's very difficult to play a team twice within a week, credit West Georgia, Stacey's done a great job with them and they were the better team in the first 20 minutes of the second half but what I liked today is we defended well, we were resilient and we got the goal which settled us a down a bit," said head coach Chris Hennessey. "We are a young team but we've also got some veterans that know what I takes to win in postseason play so we have a lot to look forward to and a lot to be positive about going into the final four."
Lee improves to 13-5-1 on the year and has allowed just one goal over its six match winning streak. The loss ends West Georgia's season at 7-9-3.
The Lady Flames, the three seed in the eight-team field, will take on Montevallo in the semifinals on Friday. The seventh-seeded Falcons upset Mississippi College, 1-0 on Tuesday.
