MOBILE, Ala. – The Lee University men's soccer team's six-match unbeaten streak came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss Sunday afternoon at Spring Hill College. The Flames (7-3-2, 5-1-1 GSC) had won five straight before recording a 0-0 tie at West Florida on Friday.
Samaan Williams put the Flames ahead 1-0 just 20:04 into the match when he intercepted a pass back to the Spring Hill goalkeeper and finished into an empty net from six yards out.
The lead held up until the 72
nd minute when Spring Hill (9-1, 5-0 GSC) tallied the equalizer. Alexander Lipinski's goal was assisted by Tilman Schober and Axel Forslund. Neither team was able to add another goal in regulation and for the second match in three days the Flames headed to overtime.
Matthew Moreno delivered the game-winner for the Badgers off a free kick just 4:31 into the extra period. Schober collected his second assist.
Spring Hill outshot the Flames 13-7, including 2-0 in overtime, with both teams placing three shots on goal. Daniel Hrenko recorded one save for Lee and Alessandro Erdelyi stopped two attempts.
"This is the fourth away game in two weekends," commented Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. "I thought we were going to lack a little bit of energy and I think that got to us a little. This was a long stretch and we were always looking at it and knowing it was coming. It's up to us that we regroup, we recover physically and mentally, and just get ready for the next few games. We still have a good season ahead of us."
The Flames have tallied 16 points and remain tied for first in the GSC with West Florida (5-0-1), while Spring Hill is right behind with 15 points.
Lee returns to the Lee Soccer Field on October 12 to battle Christian Brothers University at 7 p.m. It will be the Flames' first home game since a 3-0 win over Montevallo on September 23.
