Lady Flames Breeze Past Badgers

MOBILE, Ala. – After four straight challenging assignments against rugged Gulf South Conference clubs, the Lee women's soccer team was able to take a step back and breeze to a 6-0 victory over host Spring Hill College on Sunday afternoon.

"We needed this one today," stressed Lee head coach Chris Hennessey after the win. "It's been two long road trips which has taken a lot mentally and physically out of the girls. I thought we played well for the entire game and scored some good goals."

The Lady Flames took advantage of three penalty kicks as they improved their overall record to 7-4-1 and 4-3 in GSC. Spring Hill dropped to 1-10 and 1-7.

"We now have to focus on next weekend and continue to build on the momentum of today," added Hennessey.  Lee returns home for a pair of GSC contests next weekend, facing Christian Brothers on Friday at 5 p.m. and rival Union University on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Junior Devin Healy was awarded the first of three penalty kicks at the 19:06 mark in the first half. It was her fourth goal of the year. In the 35th minute, junior Emma Higgins tallied. The unassisted goal was her second of the season.

The margin grew to 3-0 by the halftime break when sophomore Kelsey Yoder was awarded the first of two penalty kicks. It marked her fourth goal. GSC leading scorer Mia Hollingsworth registered her 10th goal of the year at the 50:10 mark. It was unassisted and came from some 10 yards out.

Yoder stepped up for her second PK in the 53rd minute. The penalty kick gave her five goals on the year. A freshman was rewarded in the 79th minute. Abbie Vibbert finished from the top of the box after an assist from senior Kate Carney.

The Lady Flames fired at will for most of the afternoon, taking 28 shots and placing 15 on target. The defense allowed the Badgers only seven shots, three on frame. Lee keeper Taylor Green enjoyed a clean sheet and picked up three saves. Badgers keeper HP Fluharty was kept busy and accounted for nine saves.
