The Lee University men's tennis team ended its regular season with a 5-4 loss to No. 40 Auburn University at Montgomery Friday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. It was the third consecutive Gulf South Conference match the Flames (10-8, 4-7 GSC) battled to a 5-4 result with the last two ending in defeat.
Lee took a 1-0 lead following a default win at No. 3 doubles before AUM (9-7, 7-3 GSC) posted 8-6 scores at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles to carry a 2-1 advantage into singles competition.
Following another default win (at No. 6 singles) by the Flames, AUM rattled off two singles victories to move within one point of claiming the team win.
Rhys Milne overcame a 6-2 loss in his first set to 21
st-ranked Eban Straker-Meads with a 7-5 margin in the second set and finished the upset with a 6-1 tally in the third set. It was the second ranked opponent Milne defeated this week.
Jake Okines held on for a 7-5 tie-breaker win in the opening set with Alvaro Terron, ranked No. 29, but was unable to carry the momentum. Terron claimed the final two sets 6-2 and 6-4 to score the fifth team point and secure the AUM victory.
Daniel Prata provided the final margin with a three-set win over Giovanni Bellio in the fifth position. Prata posted a 7-0 tie-breaker in the first set, dropped the second set 6-1 and outlasted Bellio 14-12 in the finale.
The Flames return to action next week in the GSC Championship at Lagoon Park Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala. Their opponent and match time are yet to be determined.
