ROME, Ga. – The Lee University women's tennis team ended a three-match slide with a 7-2 defeat of Shorter University Tuesday afternoon at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex.
The Lady Flames (8-5, 5-4 GSC) took a quick 1-0 lead due to Shorter (4-8, 1-7 GSC) not having enough players to compete at No. 3 doubles. Francesca Tondi and Marta Garcia-Nieto doubled up Aleksandra Durzynski and Melinda Chrun to win at No. 1 doubles. Carley Sickinger and Joanna Grzegrzolka completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 margin against Anastasia Jovicic and Martina Radinovic.
Following the default win at No. 6 singles, Laura Beth Hardesty took down Victoria Overby, 6-1 and 6-1 to secure the team victory.
Jovicic helped Shorter avoid the shut out with a three-set win in the third spot against Sickinger. Tondi held off Durzynski to win their opening set, 6-4, and earned the No. 1 singles win with a 6-0 mark in the second set. Chrun handed the Lady Hawks their second point with a straight-set win in the second position. Grzegrzolka supplied the final margin with an 8-2 score against Radinovic.
"We were pushed in doubles and found ways to come through," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We didn't play at our top level, but coming off a long weekend off, it was a tough win for us. We have two ranked teams coming in this weekend, so we will get ourselves ready, like we've done all year."
The Lady Flames return to action on Saturday against Montevallo. The GSC match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start at the DeVos Tennis Center.
