CLEVELAND, Miss. – Head coach Derek Potteiger loves his team to play a fast, up-tempo brand of soccer and the Lee men's soccer team delivered on Friday night as it used a flurry of three first half goals to take down Delta State, 3-0 in a Gulf South Conference contest.
Alie Coldron got the scoring started as he scored his third goal of the year in the fifth minute off a free kick to get the Flames on the board early.
Just five minutes later (9:28) Palle Jespersen found the back of the net to extend the margin. The striker from Malente, Germany scored off a rebound from his own shot to give him four goals on the year.
While the Statesmen were still reeling Samaan Williams delivered the knockout blow with a quick strike just 50 seconds later. Williams has now scored in back to back contests for the Flames.
"I'm really proud of the guys for that performance. That was the first time we competed with the competitive fire I have been asking for and when we put that together with our quality and the guys commitment to our system we can be a very good team," said head coach Derek Potteiger. "I do think we deserved another goal or two in the second half but that' son us to finish those looks. The boys are in a good spot at the moment and looking forward to the game on Sunday."
Daniel Hrenko, fresh off GSC Defender of the Week honors, delivered his fifth clean sheet of the year and had three saves. Matthew Klinck had nine saves while allowing the three goals in net for the Statesmen.
Lee held a 16-4 advantage in shots and placed 12 on frame. Jespersen led the way with six shots while Jared McWhorter and Coldron each took three.
The Flames remain unbeaten in conference play improving to 4-0 with their fourth straight victory and are now 6-2-1 overall. Delta State is searching for that elusive first victory as it falls to 0-7-1 and 0-4 in league play.
Lee will look to remain unbeaten in the GSC as it crosses the Magnolia State to take on Mississippi College on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
