MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University men's cross country team placed three runners in the top nine and seven in the top 20, but fell short of a fifth consecutive title after finishing second to The University of Alabama in Huntsville.
The Chargers had three of the top four finishers, including individual champion Jay Day (24:57.04). UAH added two more runners at 13
th and 14
th to complete its top five.
UAH tallied 35 total points with the Flames next at 52 points. Mississippi College was a distant third with 111 points.
"We just didn't really have any urgency out there," said Lee head coach Caleb Morgan. "We ran the first couple miles too relaxed and let the race get away from us."
Casey Guthery was Lee's top runner, seventh overall, with a mark of 25:29.25 in the 8K race. Caleb Eagleson and Moises Ponce were the next two runners across the line. Eagleson was eighth (25:45.09) and Ponce finished ninth (25:47.37).
Thomas Kelton finished 12
th at 25:56.99 for 12
th place. Will Stone finished Lee's top five at No. 16 (26:14.11). Ezekiel Harless (26:18.75) and Adan Rodriguez (26:19.52) were 19
th and 20
th, respectively.
Elias Sandifer's time of 26:54.47 put him in at 35
th. Dawson Reed was Lee's final finisher at 28:31.64 (75
th).
Guthery, Eagleson and Ponce were named First Team All-GSC. Kelton, Stone, Harless and Rodriguez finished among the next 10 to earn Second Team All-GSC honors.
Up next for the Flames will be the NCAA Division II South Region Championships on November 9 in Lakeland, Florida.
