After 110 minutes of action the Lee men's soccer team and the Mississippi College Choctaws settled for a 1-1 draw on Friday night from the Lee Soccer Field.
The two teams went scoreless in the first half before the Choctaws finally connected in the 64th minute when freshman Cameron Moser fired home his first collegiate goal from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net. The attempt came after a deflected cross and seemed to catch the Lee defense flat-footed.
The Flames would draw even in the 78th minute as Tristian Lyle connected on a penalty kick for his second goal of the season. The Flames earned the penalty after two players were pulled down in the box on a corner kick.
From there the clubs exchanged jabs back and forth before ending in the tie. The Choctaws thought they had earned a penalty chance of their own with just seconds remaining in regulation after some physical play in the box but the referee did not blow the whistle.Â
The stat sheet reflected the tie score with Lee holding a slight 18-17 advantage in shots and 8-6 edge in shots on frame. The Flames were awarded eight corners while the Choctaws took five.
Lee keeper Daniel Hrenko had five saves while allowing just his fourth goal in eight matches. Alejandro Chavarria was equally tough in net for the visitors with seven saves and has given up just five goals in seven matches.
"We knew it was going to be hard to score against these guys. I was really proud of the guys with Jonah (Bryan) missing from the back line and Tanner (Carter) and others played well to keep it 1-1 and earn us a point," said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger.
The Flames move to 5-1-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the GSC. Mississippi College is now 3-1-3 on the year and 2-0-1 in league play.
"This is a our first opportunity to go Friday, Sunday so we will get our depth tested but I think we are a deep team and we had some guys step up tonight and we will also need some guys to play better on Sunday than they did tonight and I think we will see them respond well," concluded Potteiger.
The Flames will entertain the Delta State Statesmen on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Delta State will also be coming off a double-overtime match as they battled Shorter to a 2-2 draw in Rome, Ga. on Friday evening.
