It has always been a battle when the Lee women's soccer team faces Mississippi College and Friday afternoon was certainly no different. Last year, the Choctaws defeated the Lady Flames in the regular season contest 3-1 but Lee bounced back to defeat the Mississippi squad in the NCAA national tournament 2-1 in overtime.
Â
The Choctaws duplicated their regular-season performance from last year by defeating the home-standing Lady Flames 3-1. Mississippi College improved to 3-0 in GSC play and 5-1 overall. The Lady Flames dropped to 1-1 and 5-2. It also ended a string of four straight shutouts by Lee.
Â
Mississippi College took a 1-0 lead at the 15:15 mark on the ninth goal of the year by the GSC Player of the Week, Katie Taylor. Lee came back to score the equalizer in the 67
th minute when Riley Henry converted her second goal of the year.
Â
The Choctaws went back on top for good in the 73
rd minute when Erin Hederman, the GSC Freshman of the Week, tallied her third score of the year. Mississippi College put the contest out of reach in the 86
th minute on Emma Claire Furman's first goal of the year.
Â
"Full credit goes to Mississippi College tonight. It was evident they wanted to win more than we did from the first whistle," said disappointed Lee coach Chris Hennessey. The defensive minded Choctaws allowed Lee eight shots and only three were on goal. The visitors took advantage of their 10 shots, placing six on target.
Â
"We lacked fight and intensity and were lethargic all over the field, which showed for the three goals we conceded and I must take responsibility for not preparing the team properly. Overall, it was disappointing and I will be looking for a big response on Sunday," concluded Hennessey.
Â
The Lady Flames had the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3 and just missed a goal early in the second half when the shot bounced off the bar. Choctaw keeper Gabby Kayser had two saves and improved her record to 5-1. On the other hand, Lee's Taylor Green picked up three saves in the loss and stands at 5-2 on the year.
Â
Lee will have little time to regroup and will be seeking cooler temperatures when they return to the pitch and host Delta State at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
