Flames 1-0 Victory Over UAH Clinches Berth To GSC Championship

Lee University men's soccer held off a determined Alabama Huntsville team to record a 1-0 win and clinch a berth to the Gulf South Conference Championship. The win completed a perfect weekend for the Flames with another 1-0 shutout on Friday against West Alabama.

"That was a really important weekend for this team, and I am so proud of the collective group for what they accomplished these last three days," said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. "We believe in ourselves right now and that is a really important trait to have at this point in the season."

Samaan Williams tallied what would be the lone goal of the match in the 31st minute. He gathered a pass from Samir Williams and quickly slipped it past the UAH goalkeeper.

The Flames (9-4-3, 5-3-2 GSC) outshot UAH (6-8-2, 4-4-2 GSC) by a 12-10 margin and put four shots on goal to three for the visitors. The Chargers tallied six corner kicks, all in the second half. Lee was awarded one corner kick in each half.

Daniel Hrenko turned aside all three shots UAH put on frame to record his eighth clean sheet of the season. Drew Kelly posted three saves in the loss.

The Flames are currently in fourth place in the GSC standings with one match remaining on their regular season schedule. Lee can secure a top-four finish and host a quarterfinal match with a win in their finale.

"We still have a big game left on Wednesday, but looking back over the last couple weeks we came together after three poor results and have battled for one another to earn four very good results in a row," added Potteiger. "We have a quick turnaround and have a few injuries coming out of this game, but we will be ready for Montevallo on Wednesday."

Wednesday's match against Montevallo is scheduled for a 7 p.m. EST start at Montevallo's Georgine Lamak Soccer Field.
