The Lee University Men's Tennis team stepped back into non-conference competition to defeat Martin Methodist College 7-0 Monday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames improved to 4-1, while the RedHawks fell to 1-6.
"Very complete job by the guys today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "That team had the potential to cause us problems. We did a nice job keeping our foot on the pedal."
The Flames won 2-of-3 doubles matches to carry a 1-0 lead into singles action. Daniel Prata and Antonio Pons beat Eduardo Costa and Anh Hoang 6-1 in the third spot. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons won by the same score against Jurgen Hildmann and Jack Hayes. MMC posted a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
Prata downed Costa 6-1, 6-1 to win at No. 3 singles. Garcia held off Jesus Quesada to win their opening set 7-5, before finishing the two-set win with a 6-1 score in the second set.
Jake Okines edged Federico Gomez 7-6 in the first set of the No. 2 singles match. Okines completed the individual win and secured the team victory with a 6-3 margin in the second set.
Antonio Pons was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Hildmann and Cristian Pons lost just one game to Manuel Rodilla. Bruno Medeiros completed the shut out with a 6-2, 6-4 win at the sixth position.
The Flames travel to Greeneville, Tenn., on Wednesday for a non-conference battle with Tusculum University. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Roger M. Nichols Tennis Complex.
