TIGERVILLE, S.C. – The Lee University Women's Tennis team opened its season with a 7-0 win over North Greenville University Friday afternoon at NGU's Vance Tennis Complex. The Crusaders dropped to 1-6 on the season.
"I'm pretty happy with the result," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "It was a pretty typical first match. The conditions were really tough today, it was really windy. Both teams did a good job of going out and taking care of business. The girls overcame a little bit of tightness in the beginning. It was just a good team win."
The Lady Flames swept the three doubles matches to earn a 1-0 lead. Lisa Kirr and Lauren Trammell gave Lee its first doubles win with a 6-0 takedown of Bethany Tankersley and Nicole Dalious. Carley Sickinger and Francesca Tondi gave Lee the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Fernanda de Lucca and Liz Medina. Micaela Belen Maiz and Asia Grzegrzolka completed doubles action with a 6-3 win over Gala Castello and Jhovana Brena.
Trammell blanked Dalious and Kirr did the same to Tankersley to put the Lady Flames ahead 3-0. Sickinger was a 6-0, 6-3 winner against de Lucca to secure the team win with the fourth point.
Maiz recorded matching set scores of 6-1 to beat Medina. Grzegrzolka dropped just two games to Brena. Tondi completed the shutout with a 6-1, 6-3 score against Castello.
"We're going to have to play well tomorrow. If we go out there and play with a little bit of energy and show a little fight, I think we will be able to do well," added Hynes.
The Lady Flames travel to Clinton, S.C., to battle Presbyterian College in an exhibition match on Saturday before returning to the DeVos Tennis Center to open their home schedule on Thursday (Feb. 14) against Carson-Newman University at 2 p.m.
