Men's Tennis Falls To No. 14 Valdosta State

The Lee University men's tennis team's four-match win streak came to an end with a 5-2 loss to No. 14 Valdosta State University Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames fell to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in Gulf South Conference action. The Blazers improved to 5-3 (3-0 GSC).

"I don't think we played poorly," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Valdosta are very good and we held our own today. Just need to keep working hard and the results will be there."

Valdosta State grabbed an early 1-0 lead with 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Yohan Nguyen and Axel Holm led Jake Okines and Bruno Medeiros 5-3 and the match was left unfinished.

Nguyen added to the Valdosta lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Daniel Prata. Jordi Mas (ranked No. 3) held off Okines to win 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Florian Simbozel clinched the team victory for the visitors with 7-5, 7-6 scores against Jesus Garcia. VSU tallied another point when No. 19 Xavi Pineda defeated Antonio Pons 6-2 and 6-4.

Cristian Pons received a default win at No. 5 singles to end Valdosta State's shutout bid. Medeiros lost his opening set 6-2 to Robert Cizek before fighting back to win at the sixth position with a 6-4 score in the second set and a 10-7 super set tie-breaker.

The Flames step back out of conference play on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. EDT meeting with Tennessee Wesleyan University at the DeVos Tennis Center.
