HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team defeated The University of Alabama in Huntsville 6-1 in a Gulf South Conference match at the UAH Tennis Complex Friday afternoon. The result was the sixth-consecutive victory and 10
th in their last 11 matches for the Flames.
"Solid win for our guys today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "They're confident, playing good tennis for each other and wanting to keep their momentum going."
The Flames (14-3, 4-2 GSC) swept the doubles competition to hold a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons beat James Caddie and Noah Pring 6-0. Daniel Prata and Antonio Pons outlasted Timo Christen and Tim Nutz 7-5. Jake Okines and Bruno Medeiros were 6-4 winners over Dylan Hall and Sebastian Rohrbach.
Prata posted matching 6-3 set scores to beat Nutz in straight sets. Okines won at No. 1 singles with 6-1 and 6-3 scores against Christen. Cristian Pons defeated Caddies 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the team victory.
Medeiros extended the Lee lead to 5-0 with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Pring in the sixth position. Garcia downed Rohrbach 6-1 and 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.
UAH (5-8, 0-6 GSC) avoided the shutout with Hall's three-set win at No. 3 singles. Hall won the opening set 7-6 before Antonio Pons forced a third set with a 6-3 mark in the second set. Hall earned the win with a 10-8 tally in the third set.
The Flames return to action on Saturday, April 6, in Clinton, Miss., against Mississippi College. The GSC match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. EDT start.
