Owen Keck headed home the lone goal of the match in the 29^th minute to give the Lee men's soccer team a 1-0 shutout over Embry-Riddle to open up the 2019 season Saturday evening from the Lee Soccer Field.

Eemeli Makela delivered a beautiful ball off a free kick just outside the box to connect with Keck for the strike.

Daniel Hrenko kept the clean sheet in goal for Lee and thanks to a stingy defensive effort did not face a shot on goal the entire match. The Flames outshot the Florida club 9-3 and put four on frame.

"Owen has shown a hunger all preseason and just gets on the end of set pieces. I told the guys set pieces change games. We like scoring off of set pieces and we did a nice job of not allowing them to get many," said third-year head coach Derek Potteiger.

The two clubs duked it out in a physical battle that saw 17 total fouls and eight total cards, two by Lee and six by the Eagles, and a little pushing and shoving at the final horn.

"You never want to see the scrum so to speak at the end of the game but guys were feisty tonight and I love to see that competitive fire come out . We obviously want to make sure we are playing smart and disciplined but I thought we competed all night tonight and I was glad to see that right from the start," said Potteiger.

The Flames appeared poised to add to the advantage with 14 minutes remaining in the match as Jared McWhorter sneaked past a defender and drew a foul in the box. McWhorter's penalty kick was turned away by Gudmunder Sigurbjonsson. Jack Crichton started in net for the Eagles but left at the 70:23 mark with a head injury. Sigurbjonsson worked the remaining 19-plus minutes.

The Flames (1-0) will get back on the pitch on Tuesday as they host Lincoln Memorial at 7:30 p.m.
