The Lee University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-2 decision against Lees-McRae College Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
The Flames (1-1) secured the doubles point after winning two of the three contests. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons were 6-3 winners against Patryk Garwacki and Jofre Tura-Campalans. The No. 20 doubles team of Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons beat Hanquing Wang and Miodrag Popovic 6-3.
Lees-McRae (4-3) avoided the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win by Fitzgerald Lomp and Matt Meluch against Denis Muratovic and Drew Johnston.
Cristian Pons was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 3 singles and Garcia extended the Lee lead to 3-0 with the same scores against Wang at the top spot.
Garwacki ended the shutout with a three-set win over Antonio Pons. Pons won the opening set 6-4, but Garwacki posted 6-2 and 7-5 scores in the next two sets to complete the comeback win. Meluch pulled the visitors within one point with a 7-6, 6-3 defeat of Johnston.
Muratovic clinched the team win after beating Lomp 7-5 and 6-2. Medeiros won his opening set with Popovic 7-6. He recovered from losing the second set 6-2 to win the match with a 6-2 advantage in the third set.
The Flames return to action on Sunday, February 16, to open Gulf South Conference competition against Christian Brothers University. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis center.
