Despite earning the doubles point the Lee women's tennis team fell just short in the upset bid falling 4-3 to No. 17 Tusculum on Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
Carley Sickinger and Dana Moreno opened the day with a 6-2 win over Sarah Primik and Martina Marras at No. 3 doubles. Lisa Kirr and Micaela Belen Maiz made a statement and sealed the point with a 6-3 win over the No. 10 tandem of Africa Mota and Julia Lopez at No. 1 doubles. Lauren Trammel and Sierra Donaldson completed the sweep with a 6-5 (7-5) tie breaking win over Emilie Hansen and Amber Lackey.
From there however the Pioneers flexed their muscles claiming 4 of the 6 matches in singles to claim the team victory.
Belen-Maiz and Moreno earned wins for the Lady Flames. Belen Maiz won convincingly, 6-1, 6-1 over Mota at No. 3 singles. Moreno posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 singles.
Up 2-1 after Belen-Maiz win at three, Carley Sickinger went three sets with Hansen at No. 1 before falling 4-6, 6-4, 1-6.No. 16 Lopez topped Kirr, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot while Primik knocked off Donaldson, 6-2, 6-3 at four. The clinching point came at No. 5 singles as Marras defeated Trammell, 6-0, 6-1. The Pioneers move to 3-1 on the year.
The road dosen't get any easier for the 3-1 Lady Flames as they travel to Pensacola to take on No. 7 West Florida on Sunday at 10 a.m.
