HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team posted a 4-3 non-conference win at Lincoln Memorial University Thursday evening. The Flames ended a two-game losing skid to even their record at 3-3, while LMU dropped to 1-7.
Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons pushed the Flames out to an early advantage with a 6-4 win over Iker Moure and Sebastian Colla at No. 1 doubles. Fabian Sjokvist and Jake Tuchmann beat Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons 6-4 to leave the No. 3 doubles match to decide the team point. Nico Ramirez and Drew Johnston held off Nic Goslar and Xavier Marti 7-6 to earn the point for Lee.
LMU's Marti defeated Cristian Pons 6-1, 6-2 to even the score at 1-1. Antonio Pons used 6-1 scores in the second and third sets to overcome a 6-3 first-set loss to Goslar in the fifth position.
Garcia took down Moure with scores of 6-2 and 6-4 to push the Lee lead to 3-1. Ramirez clinched the team victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Sjokvist.
LMU claimed the final two singles matches to set the final 4-3 margin. Tuchmann beat Johnston 6-2 and 6-2. Colla completed the match with a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Medeiros.
"We held our nerve in doubles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Nico and Drew did a great job pulling their match out after a slow start. Jesus was very solid and Antonio showed some grit to come back from a set down. We needed it. We just need to get back now and work on getting ready for West Alabama."
The Flames return to Gulf South Conference action on Saturday with a trip to Livingston, Alabama and a date with West Alabama. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. EST.
