Lady Flames Upset Bid Falls Short, Lose 4-3 To No. 24 West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team lost 4-3 Saturday afternoon at No. 24 West Alabama. The Lady Flames dropped to 3-4 overall and are now 1-2 in Gulf South Conference play. UWA improved to 3-3 (2-1 GSC).

"Our ladies did a tremendous job to pull themselves into a winning position," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "If we keep doing this, we are going to break through."

The Tigers took the early advantage with a 6-2 win by Daryna Hukasian and Valeria Arevalo against Lauren Trammell and Sierra Donaldson. Haina Franco and Thea Yang earned UWA the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Matina Ujdur and Lisa Kirr. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with the score tied at 5-5.

Micaela Belen Maiz posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles against Yang to even the score. Carley Sickinger overcame a 6-0 loss in the first set to win in three sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-1 in the final two sets.

Kirr also battled back from a 6-0 first-set loss to win in three sets. She beat Hukasian 6-3 in the second set and finished the comeback with a 7-5 tiebreaker to win the final set 7-6.

"Mica has stepped up to another level this year. Carley and Lisa showed incredible resiliency to rebound from 0-6 first sets," complimented Hynes.

Arevalo stopped the Lee run with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ujdur and Hardija Vidnere tied the team score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Donaldson. Morgan Bishop clinched the team victory with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Dana Moreno.

"We will go back and get some much-needed rest, then start getting ready for our matches this week and spring break. We just need to build some momentum," added Hynes.

The Lady Flames return to the DeVos Tennis Center Thursday, March 5, to face Young Harris College. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
