No. 9 Lady Flames Move to 9-0 with Dominating Shutout of Valdosta State

The No. 9 Lee women's soccer team battled a driving rain and dominated from start to finish to shutout Valdosta State, 3-0 on Sunday afternoon from the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

Riley Henry got the party started early as she scored on a header in the sixth minute set up off a beautiful cross from Mallory Hayden. The Lady Flames would make it 2-0 in the 38th minute as Lauren Weimer hammered home a cross from Sage Sammeli. Lee limited the Blazers to just one shot in the first half and tallied nine of its own.

"I really like the way we are playing right now," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "We played a complete match in all facets of the game today and really did a nice job of bouncing back from a hard fought win on Friday night. It will be good to get some rest and heal up during our bye week before we begin the second half of the season."

The Lady Flames defense allowed just three second half shots to post their sixth shutout of the season. Lee outshot Valdosta State, 14-4 in the contest.

Regan Henkey put the icing on the cake as she zipped one from the far-right side of the pitch into the left corner of the net for her first score of the season.

"I'm not sure Regan was planning on scoring off of that ball," noted Hennessey with a smile. "But I'm happy she found the back of the net and I thought we got great production off the bench today which is what you need on the second game of the weekend."

Jackie Burns moves to 7-0 in the year in net for the Lady Flames, but she was quick to credit her teammates for a dominating defensive effort, "I didn't have to face a shot on goal all day and that's because my defenders did a great job of limiting their opportunities," said Burns. "We have players all throughout the lineup that can set up and make plays and every match it seems someone different is making a big play."

Valdosta State keeper, Samantha Blanford faced a barrage of shots and allowed three goals while recording a pair of saves. She falls to 3-1-1 on the year.

The Lady Flames improve to a perfect 9-0-0 on the year and are 6-0-0 and in first place in the GSC. The Blazers fall to 5-2-1 and are 2-1-1 in league action.

Lee will get a much-needed bye week to rest up and heal before getting back on the pitch on Oct. 15 for a showdown with West Florida in Pensacola, Fla.
