There's starting fast and then there's what the Lee men's soccer team did on Saturday evening in a 3-0 dominating victory over Emmanuel College.
The Flames scored just 34 seconds into the match before many of the fans had time to buy popcorn and find their seat at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. Mattia Balzano took a pass from Caio Arantes and streaked down the right wing before delivering a beautiful cross to Fabrizo Scimo for his first goal as a Flame.
The party was just getting started as just two minutes later, at the 2:39 mark Arantes took a pass from Jared McWhorter danced around the keeper and fired his fourth goal of the season into the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
The Flames would take the lead into the halftime break. After the intermission Lee again wasted little time as it scored just 1 minute and 21 seconds into the second 45. Jared McWhorter blasted a shot from 15 yards out into the lower left corner of the net for his third goal of the season. Once again, it was Arantes who set up the score as he registered five points in the big win.
"This was just a complete team effort, and I was really proud with how the boys approached this past week after the tough loss last Saturday," said Lee Assistant Coach Torrey Stricklin. "We really played well in every phase of the game, and I think that will help give us some momentum as we head back into conference play on the road next weekend."
Stricklin served as the acting head coach for Derek Potteiger who was with his daughter Rylee as she recovered from surgery this past week. "We wanted to win this one for Rylee and the entire Potteiger family," noted Stricklin. "Coach (Potteiger) has done such a phenomenal job building a great culture here within the Lee men's soccer program and I'm proud to serve on his staff and these players have really bought into the family environment. We can't wait to see Rylee's big smile back on the sidelines soon."
The Flames high-powered offense got plenty of support from goalkeeper Sam Kenner and the defense as they delivered their second straight clean sheet and allowed just four shots the entire match, none in the second half. Lee outshot the Lions, 21-4 and 10-3 in shots on goal. Keener was credited with three first half saves.
Giulana Palma allowed three goals in net for the Emmanuel and posted seven saves as he faced shot after shot the entire evening.
The Flames improve to 8-2 on the year and outscored their two non-conference opponents, 5-0 after posting a 2-0 shutout win on Tuesday at Lincoln Memorial. The Lions tough season continues as they fall to 1-7 on the year and have now been outscored, 19-3 by their opponents.
Lee will put its 4-1 GSC record on the line next weekend in pair of key road battles. On Friday the Flames tangle with West Florida at 7 p.m. before a Sunday matinee at Spring Hill at 2 p.m.
