McWhorter's Overtime Heroics Send Flames Back to GSC Championship

PENSACOLA, Florida - Jared McWhorter rocketed a shot from 15 yards out into the top right corner of the net just one minute into overtime to send the Lee men's soccer team to the GSC Championship match with a 1-0 victory over Spring Hill College on Friday afternoon.

The two clubs battled to a 0-0 draw in regulation before McWhorter's heroics in the overtime period. The Flames finished with 15 shots while the Badgers tallied 10. Both teams put four shots on target.

"That was a classic Jared moment and executed to perfection. I thought at times in the game we were timid and tentative but that was a great team effort we switched the point of attack and found Eddie who drove in who found Jared in his sweet spot. And you could tell the moment he got nobody else was touching the ball it was coming inside and he was going far post and that's what he's capable of doing. I'm proud of him, he had tough season in terms of coming back from injury and a sickness earlier in the season so for him to get that moment was really great.

"With this being my last season I wanted to make it a good one and we want to win the conference again and I want to get two rings while I'm here. I got the ball wide and that's my favorite spot and I just had confidence in the moment, and I got by and took the shot and it win it," said McWhorter. "We just need to embrace this moment on Sunday. The years go by quickly and even for the younger guys you have to take advantage of the special chances you get to play for a championship."

Sam Keener registered four saves in the victory and posted his ninth shutout of the year. The veteran goalkeeper now has 0.71 goals against average on the year.

"Prior to overtime we talked about just finding a heroic moment in overtime and doing all the little things right to create those opportunities," added Potteiger. "In the playoffs you just have to win and advance. I thought today we played through what wasn't our best performance today, but we preserved to capture a big a moment and I'm really happy for Jared to deliver that for us."

Alessandro Erdelyi posted three saves for Spring Hill. Luca Carrese led the Badgers with three shots.

"I really like the mentality of this team," noted Potteiger. "We've got the right leadership group that pushes us through, and other guys listen and respond. In these moments, even when we don't play great, instead of drooping our shoulders and stepping back our team pushes our chest out and we find a way to get it done. I think that's one of our competitive advantages and that showed tonight."

The Flames improve to 13-4-1 on the year and will now get a chance to defend their 2019 GSC Championship as they play the winner of West Florida and Auburn Montgomery on Sunday at 1 p.m. Spring Hill ends the season at 11-8.
