PREVIEW - Flames Look to Defend GSC Championship, Battle Badgers in GSC Semifinals

All-GSC midfielder Eemeli Makela and the Flames look to defend their GSC Championship.
PENSACOLA, Florida - The Lee men's soccer team will look to defend their 2019 GSC Championship as they battle upset-minded Spring Hill College Friday at 4:30 p.m.

The 4th-seeded Flames took down Mississippi College on Sunday in the GSC Quarterfinals, 1-0 on a goal by Collin Lewis set up on a cross from Drew Donehoo. The 8th-seeded Badgers showcased just how much depth the GSC has by going on the road and knocking off regular season champion, Montevallo, 2-1. Spring Hill fell behind after an early Falcon goal but battled back with two second half goals.

"We have said since the beginning of the season that we are playing for the month of November.  It's finally here and we find ourselves in good place.  Every game in the playoffs is a battle and nothing will come easy, but we are looking forward to being back at the championship weekend and taking advantage of the opportunity," said Lee Head Coach Derek Potteiger.

 Potteiger recorded his 100th coaching victory Thursday night against Shorter. Potteiger is now 40-23-15 in is five seasons with the Flames. He previously coached at Gordon College (Mass.) and is 101-41-18 overall. Potteiger was a two time All-American at Penn State University and former first assistant for the United States Naval Academy (2009-13).

Defender Jeremy Bischoff and midfielders Eemeli Makela and Fabian Navarro garnered first team honors while goalkeeper Sam Kenner and captain Jared McWhorter were named to the second team. Led by Keener, Bischoff and defenders Nick Meijboom and Sagi Rada the the Flames' defense has allowed a conference-fewest 13 goals this season.

The Flames are looking to snap a five-match losing streak to Spring Hill. All five matches have been decided by one goal. The last Lee victory over the Badgers was a 3-1 contest back on Oct. 7, 2016 at home. The winner of today's match will advance to the GSC Championship on Sunday to face the winner of West Florida and Auburn Montgomery
