The Lee University men's soccer team completed its regular season with a 4-0 victory over Shorter University Thursday evening at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. The Flames improved to 11-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Gulf South Conference action. Shorter's season ended with a 2-12 (0-11 GSC) record.
Jared McWhorter opened the scoring in the 37
th minute as he calmly placed a penalty kick low into the left corner of the net. The Flames would take a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Just 48 seconds into the second half, Fabian Navarro slipped a shot past the Shorter goalkeeper to double the lead. Five minutes later, Nick Meijboom delivered a header off McWhorter's pass from the corner. Senior Drew Donehoo added another insurance goal early in the 76
th minute with a header on Collin Lewis' corner kick. It was the first goal of Donehoo's four-year Lee career.
Lee took 22 shots with nine placed on goal, while Shorter put one of its five shots on frame. The Flames were awarded six corner kicks to none for the visitors.
Sam Keener earned the win in goal. He recorded one save in nearly 73 minutes played. Roel Martinez and Sebastian Oyler split the final 17 minutes with neither needing to make a save.
The Flames entered the day in a three-way tie with West Florida and Mississippi College. Both the Argos and Choctaws earned wins earlier in the day to leave Lee needing a win to claim the right to host a GSC Championship first round game. West Florida received the No. 3 seed due to its two wins over Lee and Mississippi College. The Flames held the head-to-head tie-breaker over the Choctaws to land at No. 4 and will host No. 5 Mississippi College on Sunday at a time to be determined.
The win not only secured a home match on Sunday it was also the 100
th coaching victory for Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. He is now 100-41-18 overall with a mark of 39-23-15 in his fifth season at Lee.
Prior to the match, the Flames held a ceremony to honor its senior class. Those playing their final regular season home game were Edgar Cervantes, Samir Eldahan, Joshua James, Oyler, Donehoo and McWhorter.
