The second-ranked Lee University women's soccer team advanced to the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference Championship by defeating Christian Brothers University 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. The Lady Flames will travel to Pensacola, Florida and face West Florida on Thursday, Nov. 11 and will be seeking their 18
th straight victory.
"It was just a great team effort by both our defense and by our offense in scoring goals. Now we just have to start getting ready for West Florida. We will leave on Wednesday and face the always tough Argonauts the following day," said Coach Chris Hennessey, who secured his 100th career coaching victory on Sunday, all coming at his alma mater.
The Lady Flames jumped on top at the 12:27 mark on the first of two goals by Alexis Hale. The unassisted score came off the inside of the post and into the back of the net. Her seventh goal of the year came in the 33
rd minute and was assisted by Riley Henry. She rebounded a saved shot inside the eight and placed it inside the left side of the net.
After leading 2-0 at the break, the Lady Flames scored twice in the second half. The first score came when Nora Burton tallied her first score of the season in the 60
th minute. It was unassisted. The final tally was recorded at the 75:51 mark when Kassidy Kellett picked up an assist from Tatum Miller and posted her third goal of the year.
Again, the Lee defense stood out, allowing the Lady Buccaneers only one shot the entire afternoon and it was on goal. Jackie Burns got credit for the save and the win. On the other hand, the Lady Flames fired 18 shots. Henry led the way with three shots on goal, Hale had two, Ellie Crisler, Kelsey Yoder, Burton, Sage Sammeli and Kellett had one as Lee placed 10 shots on target.
Lady Buc goalkeeper Riley Chafin had six saves while allowing four goals. There were only five corner kicks the entire afternoon. Lee had three and the Lady Bucs two. The aggressive game saw the Lady Flames whistled for 18 fouls and Christian Brothers eight.
