The Lee men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Auburn Montgomery on Sunday afternoon to open up Gulf South Conference play from the brand-new Lee Multi-Sport Complex.
The draw felt more like a win for the Flames who had to play a man down for the final 80 minutes of the 110-minute overtime match after Caio Arantes was shown a red card in the 30
th minute.
The Flames battled through the disadvantage and several injuries to key players to keep the Warhawks off the board. AUM posted 25 shots and placed seven on frame but the Lee defense was up to the task and kept a clean sheet. The shorthanded Flames attempted just four shots in the match.
Sam Keener had seven saves in goal for the Flames as he turned away a barrage of attacks in the second half and overtime periods.
"I was really proud of the guys today," said coach Potteiger. "There's a lot of distractions when you play against AUM. They are physical, intense and athletic and you can't get caught up in that and unfortunately one of our players did and it cost us but in the end the adversity that was created for us to perform that way, we needed that. I told the guys we need a team performance and we need to build some momentum from that and I looked at each one of my players and told them I was proud of them."
In what always proves to be an intense battle when these two clubs meet the match saw six cautions, one ejection and 25 total fouls.
"We have different players out of position because of injuries but that's helped us create trust and build momentum as a team because guys are stepping up. Owen Keck's never played center back for me before and played a fantastic 110 minutes. Collin Lewis plays defensive midfield and he played 85 minutes of target today so for those guys to go out and compete for each other, once again I'm just really proud of them."
The Flames move to 0-1-1 on the year while the Warhawks are now 1-0-1. Lee will visit Alabama Huntsville on Friday with kickoff set for 7 p.m.
