The Lee University men's tennis team was edged 4-3 by No. 22 West Alabama Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center in a Gulf South Conference matchup.
West Alabama (4-4, 3-0 GSC) picked up the doubles point after winning two of the three doubles matches. Christopher Bulus and Nuutti Jokinen beat Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Ilari Vesanen and Ilia Dehodiuk were 6-2 winners over Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons. Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi prevented the sweep with a 6-3 win over Anton Lof and Noah Johansen.
Five of the six singles matches went to three sets with five sets needing a tie-breaker to be decided. Bulus kept the UWA momentum with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Garcia at No. 1 singles.
Vesanen won his first and third sets with Nico Ramirez to claim the No. 2 singles match. Vesanen won the opener 6-1 and Ramirez forced a third set with a 6-3 advantage in the second set. Vesanen used a tie-break score of 7-2 to win the final set.
Dehodiuk fell 7-4 in a first-set tie-break to Cristian Pons before recovering to win the match with 6-4 and 7-5 scores in the next two sets to clinch the team victory.
Antonio Pons recorded the lone straight-set singles win 6-3 and 6-0 over Patricio Nieto. Dasi and Jokinen traded tie-break set wins to force a third set. Dasi claimed the No. 4 singles win with a 10-7 super set score.
Diego Garcia lost his opening set 6-0 to Lof. Garcia fought back to win the second set via a 7-3 tie-break and completed the comeback with a 10-4 super set.
The Flames return to action Wednesday, March 24, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The non-confernce match is scheduled for 2 p.m. EDT.
